Fully Revised Second Edition of Financial Planning Competency Handbook Reflects Growing Body of Knowledge As Well As Interdisciplinary Focus for Practitioners, Students, and Faculty

August 02, 2015

Updated Guide for Exam Success and Career Excellence Contains a Majority of New Content

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. announced today that it has completely revised and updated its popular reference guide for financial planning students and practitioners. Financial Planning Competency Handbook, Second Edition, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (NYSE: JWA and JWB), is available now in bookstores and through major online retailers.

The fully updated second edition includes brand new content based upon the new Principal Knowledge Topics developed through the most recent Job Task Analysis. Each of these topics are explored from both a theoretical as well as a practical perspective through connections diagrams, practitioner profiles, and vignettes. There is also a detailed case that runs through each stage of the financial planning process. In addition, a completely new section is devoted to the interdisciplinary nature of financial planning, including diverse fields like psychology, behavioral finance, communication, the aging population, and marriage and family therapy.

“The financial planning profession has evolved significantly in the two years since the Financial Planning Competency Handbook was first published. The second edition has been revised accordingly, giving financial planning practitioners, students and educators a one-stop resource on issues facing today’s financial planning professionals as they seek to meet their clients’ changing needs,” said the book’s editor, CFP Board Director of Academic Programs and Initiatives Dr. Charles Chaffin. “With nearly two-thirds of the handbook’s content brand new, CFP Board is continuing to work to expand the body of knowledge in the financial planning profession.”

Thirty-nine volunteers from academia and the profession contributed to the 88-chapter, 944-page book, which is available in hardcover and e-book formats. Each chapter is dedicated to one of CFP Board’s 72 topic areas, bringing together theory and practice through an overview of what a CFP® professional should know in theory as well as how it works in the real world.

Those who purchase the book will get a code to access an online test bank with over 400 practice questions based on 72 core competencies covered in the book.  For an additional cost, the publisher is offering 28 continuing education credit hours to CFP® professionals who take and successfully complete the online exam.
