10 New Frequently Asked Questions on CFP Board’s Code and Standards

January 16, 2020

CFP Board is pleased to share an updated set of Frequently Asked Questions on the new Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct, which will be enforced beginning June 30, 2020.

The updated document organizes the FAQs in a manner consistent with the organization of the Code and Standards. The same letters and numbers that identify a section of the Code and Standards are used to label the FAQs most related to that section.

The updated document also introduces 10 brand new FAQs, including:

  • A.1.4: Does the Fiduciary Duty in the Code and Standards apply to a one-time recommendation (either a brokerage or insurance recommendation)
  • A.10.1: What are a CFP® professional’s disclosure requirements under the new Code and Standards?
  • A.10.4: What information must CFP® professionals provide to existing and new clients now that the new Code and Standards became effective on October 1, 2019?
  • G9: May a CFP® professional who is a registered representative of a broker dealer satisfy CFP Board’s Fiduciary Duty?
