CFP Board Center for Financial Planning to Collaborate with Columbia’s School of Professional Studies to offer Financial Planning Teaching Program

May 09, 2016

The CFP Board Center for Financial Planning today announced a collaboration with Columbia School of Professional Studies to offer a five-day teaching certificate, starting in August, 2016.

The classroom-based program is designed for faculty who teach finance and/or accounting as well as for CFP® professionals who desire to become adjunct faculty in a CFP Board Registered Program. This new, experience-based, professional development opportunity leverages the combined expertise in financial planning and innovative teaching and learning practices established through the partnership between CFP Board’s Center for Financial Planning and Columbia University School of Professional Studies.

”The CFP Board Center for Financial Planning is pleased to offer this Teaching Program in collaboration with such a respected partner in the Columbia University School of Professional Studies,” said Charles Chaffin, Ed.D., Director of Academic Home, CFP Board Center for Financial Planning and leader of the teaching program. “We envision this program as helping current or prospective faculty, regardless of program type or delivery method, learn how to sharpen their teaching ability within the classroom and online learning platform, and gain a library of teaching resources that will enhance instruction back at their college or university.”

The program will focus on both financial planning content as well as basic instructional design, using learning objectives, student assessment, and avenues of bringing experiential learning into the classroom or online learning platform. Faculty within finance and accounting, CFP® professionals hoping to begin a full or part-time career teaching in a CFP Board Registered Program, current faculty within all CFP Board Registered Programs, and doctoral students aspiring to begin a career preparing the next generation of CFP® professionals are invited to participate in this intensive workshop this summer on the Columbia campus in New York, NY.

“We are proud to partner with CFP Board in this financial planning workshop, the first of many programs addressing the market needs in wealth management,” said Jason Wingard, PhD, Dean of the School of Professional Studies.  “Wealth management is a burgeoning field, undergoing significant disruption. Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies is excited to be working at the forefront of these changes with CFP Board’s Center for Financial Planning and driving educational innovation for teachers in financial planning.”

The five-day workshop will feature master teachers presenting innovative approaches to facilitating student achievement relative to CFP Board principal topics and learning objectives, as well as exposure to innovative avenues for registered program leadership.
