The CFP Board Center for Financial Planning created this comprehensive workforce development guide to help firms recruit, onboard, train, develop and retain the next generation of financial planners.

Professionals can also use the guide to navigate their own careers. You'll learn what to expect throughout your career, find direction for self-development efforts and obtain a step-by-step progression of skill development.

The guide, Financial Planning Career Paths: Building More Sustainable and Successful Businesses, examines five rungs of the financial planner career ladder and describes the requisite skills, experience and responsibilities needed to achieve each one:

  1. Analyst
  2. Associate Advisor
  3. Service Advisor
  4. Lead Advisor
  5. Partner

The guide was developed with the input of leaders from 30 firms representing different types of businesses that employ financial planners and advisors, and it incorporates data from research studies of compensation and career development.

The Center is thankful for the support from BNY Mellon’s Pershing, the guide’s Signature Sponsor, as well as the support of the Center’s Lead Founding Sponsor TD Ameritrade Institutional, and Founding Sponsors Northwestern Mutual, Envestnet and Charles Schwab Foundation, in partnership with Schwab Advisor Services.
