CFP Board Encourages House Committee to Pass Bill on Use of 529 Funds for Certification

October 24, 2023

On October 24, 2023, CFP Board sent a letter to the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means Chair Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO) and Ranking Member Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA) supporting H.R. 1477, the “Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act.” CFP Board encourages the Committee to approve this legislation.

The bipartisan legislation would permit owners of 529 plans to use those savings for fees and expenses required to obtain or maintain recognized postsecondary credentials, including professional certifications. As such, the legislation would allow individuals to use 529 funds for expenses and fees associated with obtaining or maintaining CFP® certification.
